Robert Frank has just passed away.No comments, just a memory. My first meeting with him. 1974, a call from Charles Matton: “Come for lunch Sunday in the country at Richard Bohringer’s house; Delpire and Robert Frank will be there. ”
I was there 30 minutes before the given time. Brilliant and fascinating lunch.
The other star of the lunch was the cannabis field that Bohringer had planted and that the neighboring farmers thought was weed!
Finally, I grew bolder:
– “Robert Frank, we would like our magazine “Photo” to publish your images.”
– “Why not: write to me, I’ll take care of it.”
I never received anything.
6 months later, I went to one of his openings in NYC.
– “Ah yes, I remember, you are very unlucky, I received your letter, the window opened up, and then flew away!”.
The Americans are one of my favorite books, and I must have watched Cocksucker Blues 50 times!
