The sign located in Rio at the Nara Roesler Gallery, which opened its doors in the Ipanema district hardly a year ago, offers an exhibition by Milton Machado. Here the carioca artist, known for his hybrid work mixing drawing, sculpture and photography, is showing a video and some photographs.
In this exhibition, he plays with approximations between the images, either by juxtaposing one of his photographs with a painting by Courbet a play of reflections is a window creating a meeting of two worlds, or even formally presenting images one after another on a piece of film in the form of a contact sheet and of which he describes in a text the different time scales that punctuate them.
In the title of the exhibition, “X” the artist tells us about these meetings between the images, these juxtapositions. He explains, “X. Cancellations? Deletions? Bankrupt businesses? Not really. Here, in this mischievous sequence of oppositions, “this x that” has something to do with multiplication and potentiality. In other words, intensities. Like, for example, Descartes x Montaigne, Rubens x Poussin, Sylvester x Tweety Bird, broomsticks x mirrors, lightning x rivers, flies x mannequins. Maybe it’s about time to admit that we are dealing here – in covering all these multiple photographic narratives – with a productive negotiation between differences.”
