The artiste Renate Bertimann won the Grand Austrian State Prize 2017. Given each year, this award recognizes an Austrian personality chosen from four different artistic categories (literature, music, visual arts and architecture). The prize was awarded to the photographer by the Minister of Culture, Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek.
Born in 1964, Renate Bertimann is an avant-garde artist, engaged in feminist struggles and manipulating visual arts in its broad sense. Practicing both painting, collage, photography, performance, sculpture, her works questioned relations between men and women and their social stereotypes, sexuality through genre and eroticism. She is currently exhibited at S2 / Sotheby’s Gallery in London. She is the third Austrian to receive this award, after Maria Lassnig (1988) and Brigitte Kowanz (2009).
