For over 30 years, the VU art center has contributed to the development of photography in Quebec. Located on the heights of Quebec City, the four-story building regularly hosts exhibitions, photographers-in-residence and conferences. On the ground floor, the center offers professional services in film and digital production. The technicians are artist members of the center. Open to all, the center also offers students and researchers access to its documentation center. Although one of its mandates is to support the work of Quebec artists, VU also promotes international exchanges related to research in contemporary photography. To that end, the center recently launched a new book collection. Two works have been published so far this year: Mégantic by Quebec photographer Benoit Aquin, which opened the series and whose release was held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal; and Village, a large book co-published and co-produced by the Swedish artists Klara Källström and Thobias Fäldt, which illustrates, from an outsider’s perspective—and a sometimes humorous one—the complex relationships between Quebec, Canadian and the First Nations. These join a collection featuring many works on Canadian photography.
If you’re passing through the capital, come meet the charming artistic director, Anne-Marie Proulx, who gives guided tours of the center and introduces visitors to its wonderful initiatives.
