Internationally renowned photographer Chiara Samugheo, the first woman photographer in Italy, started out in photojournalism.
Her early reports condemned the negative aspects of Italian society, from the barracks in the Neapolitan suburbs (“Le baraccate di Napoli”) to the prison system (“La regina delle zingare in carcere”) to the disturbing phenomenon of possession in Apulia (“Le invasate”).
In the late fifties, she gave up reporting and devoted herself to the world of divas, photographing the artists and stars of the cinema. Her photographs are like a living memory of this time, and they appeared on the covers of some of the world’s most prestigious magazines.
Samugheo took over 165,000 pictures of stars. Her portraits show female beauty through a detail, a ray of light or a carefully designed decor. She has published several books from this enormous collection of portraits: « Stelle di carta »(1984), « Il reale e l’effimero »(1986), « Cento dive, cento anni di cinema »(1995), « AI cinema con le stelle »(1995), « fuori dal set » (2012), « grandi autori :chiarasamugheo » (2014).
