A photography contest has been organized to coincide with the fourth edition of the Carte blanche PMU / Le BAL. The theme of the contest is “Get a Lucky Hand: The Game, The Sport and You.” Photo lovers have until February 13 to participate by submitting a photograph through Wipplay.com.
Poker and blackjack tables, racetracks, basketball and football games, frantic matches of tennis or ping-pong—games of any kind should be the setting and story for your photographs. The only requirement is that at least one hand appear in the image.
The partnership between Le BAL and the PMU is no coincidence. After World War II, a PMU betting office at 6 impasse de la Défense, the current address of Le BAL, became the largest PMU in France and remained so until 1992. With this shared history, the French leisure company and the Paris exhibition space joined forces to support contemporary photography.
“Photography is a tool for contemporary art,” says Benoît Cornu, PMU’s Director of Communications. “PMU is a French institution with a heritage going back over eighty years. But it needs to think about the future.” By choosing to, “cause a surprise and make a difference, and by getting involved with the world of contemporary photography, the PMU wants to modernize its image.” The company now plays a crucial role in the art world. “Contemporary photography is for everyone,” and the Carte Blanche PMU/Le BAL brings together the art world and the street.
The Carte Blanche PMU/Le BAL started in 2010 with a 20,000€ prize, and Malik Nejmi paved the way with Turfisme, a documentary vision of the world of horse racing, followed by Mohamed Bouroissa’s RIP, which took a more conceptual approach to betting. In 2012, the Carte Blanche opened up the field by holding a call for submissions. Olivier Cablat was selected with Fouille, a highly visual work that added a new dimension to previous editions. This year, starting April 27, we’ll be able to view the Carte Blanche 2013 winner Kourtney Roy with her series of self-portraits taken in the world of games and betting.
