As part of PhotoSaintGermain and the Lithuanian Season in France, the Ségolene Brossette Galerie presents “The journey – Le voyage aux origines”, an exhibition by Marilia Destot.
In The journey, Marilia Destot imagines a poetic and memorial journey towards her Lithuanian Jewish origins.
Fascinated by her family diaspora, she returns to the country of her maternal ancestors, Lithuania, and explores their history and that of the Litvaks, between exile and the Shoah. Her personal quest for the story, for the missing genealogical part or for her lost Jewish heritage, is confronted with the absence of archives and the fragile effort of memory in this long oppressed country.
Immersed in nature, Marilia Destot photographs absence, traces, places, faces that echo the past. She recreates an imaginary family album; composed of landscapes of Lithuania pierced and illuminated with “presences” drawn with a needle, and torn collage portraits which reveal the layers of time and memory space. A physical and metaphorical exploration of the photographic medium, accompanied by music by Lithuanian composer Vaida Striaupaité-Beinariéné.
The journey reflects a fragile, altered, invisible memory, floating from the present to the past: that of the Lithuanian Jewish community, exiled or exterminated.
