In September 2014, Shanghai will host a new art fair dedicated entirely to photography. After three successful years of the Caochangdi PhotoSpring in Beijing, and joining the ranks of the Lianzhou International Photo Festival, Pingyao Photography Festival, Hong Kong International Photofest and Dali International Photography, Photo Shanghai will enter the hectic world of Chinese photography.
Overseen by the World Photography Organization (WPO) and the company Montgomery, Photo Shanghai was created in response to the remarkable explosion of the Pacific region’s art market. The fair will be led by Alexander Montague-Sparey, formerly the director of the photography department of Christie’s in London, who will be accompanied by a panel of personalities from the photo world: Sandy Angus (President of the WPO and Montgomery), Wang Huangshen (Director of the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing), Christopher Phillips (a curator based in New York) and Lise Li (Director of the Vanguard Gallery in Shanghai), among others.
“Photography, art fairs and China are three of the most dynamic opportunities in the art world today,” says Montague-Sparey. Although photo collectors are not as common in China as collectors of painting, sculpture and other art forms—in large part due the medium’s reproducibility, which makes it “non-unique”—photography is catching on here. Photo Shanghai arrives at just the right moment.
Galeries from around the globe will participate, such as Camera Work (Berlin), the Atlas Gallery (London), the Danziger Gallery (New York) and, of course, galleries from the Asia-Pacific region.
Those wishing to participate should take note: Photo Shanghai will accept applications up to 31st March 2014.
