Barbara Cole, whose work can be seen on Bau-Xi Gallery’s booth at Photo London, is a Canadian artist known for her ethereal underwater photography which emulates painting both stylistically and technically. Cole submerges herself, her models, her equipment, and her materials as she layers, builds, and blends her composition underwater. Her work utilizes the lens of water to explore and transform figurative qualities, and to re-envision the nature of our relationships to our surroundings. Cole’s series tend to be crafted all within lens, avoiding digital manipulation as much as possible.
Her underwater series each have their own powerful narrative, some with outward subjects and others with such figure transformation that space and composition tell the story in themselves. With Cole’s background in fashion and fashion editorial, her process channels her experience with creating a particular atmosphere through costume and set couture The painterly photographs are romantic culminations of personal and fantastical reflection, placed inside a frame to be experienced by viewers.
