Photo Elysée presents Wish This Was Real, the first exhibition dedicated to Tyler Mitchell (US, 1995) in Switzerland. Oscillating between art and fashion, the 29-year-old artist creates intimate portraits and staged scenes celebrating the beauty of Black subjects. Considered one of the rising stars of American photography, Tyler Mitchell brings together ten years of work in this exhibition.
American photographer Tyler Mitchell draws inspiration from visions of paradise, resonating with history. Since his rise in the fashion world, Mitchell has articulated a visual narrative where beauty, style, utopia, and landscape intertwine to expand the scope of representations of the Black experience through his favorite themes: self-determination and the extraordinary splendor of the everyday. Through his works, Mitchell illustrates how portraiture can both be rooted in the past while summoning imagined futures.
