The ARGENTIC Gallery in Paris presents a two-fold exhibition of the oeuvre of Philippe Salaün: his work as a photographer and as a printer. Over the past forty years, Philippe has been the privileged partner of Willy Ronis, Robert Doisneau, Edouard Boubat, Izis, Inge Morath, Seydou Keita, Malick Sidibé, and René Jacques.
The exhibition presents nearly a hundred photographs, all issued from the atelier of this Parisian printer, combining Philippe’s own work with pictures by his fellow photographers, accompanied by notes, commentaries, and anecdotes. For the past forty years, Philippe Salaün has lived and worked in the rue Beaurepaire in the Xth Arrondissement. He has become a neighborhood institution, not unlike the Parisians immortalized, as they really were, by Doisneau. Philippe Salaün belongs to a select club of printers who entertain a relationship of mutual respect and confidence with some of the greatest photographers. Philippe Salaün has thus readily teamed up with many famous or simply talented collaborators: Izis, Willy Ronis, Edouard Boubat, Robert Doisneau, Sabine Weiss, Malick Sidibé, Inge Morath, Seydou Keita, Max Pam, Jacques Dubois, Léon Herschtritt, Georges Tourdjman, Yvette Troispoux, René Jacques, Claude Batho, and Ed van der Elsken.
This partnership is the basis of long-lasting relationships which clearly come across in Philippe Salaün’s photographs. His mischievous glance catches the world in incongruous situations that happen all around us. However, while the influences are recognizable, they blend together to produce a personal style, full of sensibility, humor, charm, and respect for the subject. Salaün’s portraits, cover stories, as well as his approach to animals bring a smile to our faces and reveal surreal aspects of our everyday reality. The exhibition features nearly a hundred pictures, combining photographs and prints, creations and interpretations, as well as rekindles memories of friends who died young, but who have left behind a few seconds of eternity.
