These images were shot this spring at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington, D.C., one of my favorite places to photograph throughout the year. In the spring, the lotus leaves begin to rise up for the bottoms of the garden ponds and quickly shoot up into the air; curled up like a scroll at first, the leaves then unfurl. And as the lotus come to life, so do the other inhabitants of the garden. In spite of its location just off a busy freeway in one of the poor, rundown sections of Washington, the Aquatic Gardens are a tranquil and beautiful place that offers respite from the city surrounding it. I hope that these images convey that tranquility and beauty, along with the idea that beauty is sometimes found where it’s unexpected.
