Artist Patrick Sainton and photographer Bernard Plossu are publishing a small book, De part et d’autre [On Both Sides], which gathers and juxtaposed their work,, creating a dialogue amongst the images, drawings, and diverse forms. “We were introduced to one another in 1991,” explains Bernard Plossu. “Patrick very quickly became a brother, whose work and philosophy I liked immediately. Little by little, I went to his house a lot, taking my best photos there. Our work went well together! Even more, the Musée Réattu in Arles and our common gallery, La Non-Maison in Aix-en-Provence, both exhibited us together. We see each other often, what else is there to say? It’s the best!” Pierre Parlant, author of the introduction, talks about the collaboration like this: “When we look at Bernard Plossu’s photography while having the works of Patrick Sainton in front of us, the surprising idea comes to us that the first seems to document the second’s way of thinking, which, in his own way, had aways called out to him. A bit like one had found in the other a new way to see the same thing. As if it were necessary to welcome distance to reveal this harmony. The chiasmus of friendship. The mystery of the chiasmus. A strange play of mirrors where the reflection ceases to be an illusion. In this case, the act of documenting reveals less of an accompaniment than it indicates a recognition.” In this portfolio, we get a glimpse of their relationship.
