The Charron Gallery in Paris features the work of Stéphanie de Rougé. Alongside several other series, there is one called On Your Roof—a long-term project started in 2009 and which the artist will carry on until she leaves New York. She captures everyday and wacky moments in the lives of New Yorkers who occupy their rooftops.
« I focus on the human element in the urban environment, on the individual within a group, on silence amid the din. Or, rather, I work along the line that separates the two and brings them together. My work is at the boundary.
My photographic research has taken me to the rooftops of New York. I’ve discovered some vast spaces and some tiny ones, some transformed into terraces with Jacuzzis, others turned into vegetable gardens, many decorated with finesse and most bare, exposed to the sun. I’ve observed a curious quality of light, the sky reflecting in the silver surface, landscapes worthy of Cubist paintings, stunning views the New York skyline, and surprising silence. I’ve also encountered people who inhabit them, all of whom admit to having grown dependent on this space of refuge between the earth and the sky. They spoke of another reality, of a real sense of intimacy and lifesaving isolation. Me, too, after all these hours spent between heaven and earth, I would like to believe that there is indeed something gentle and human that can be expressed only when you are perched up above. It’s like returning to the source. »
