The gallery presents a solo exhibition by Ronan Guillou. For more than fifteen years, America has been the subject of Ronan Guillou’s photographic explorations. Throughout his long travels, Guillou quietly observes and records; he searches for landmarks, clues about his environs and evidence of its occupation. With great sensitivity, he makes visible people and places that don’t fit into the American mythology, that sit just beyond its narrative frontiers. The resulting body of work, whose form could be described as creative nonfiction, delivers a very personal vision of the poetry to be found in the fleeting moments, paradoxes and apparently trivial things of daily life.
Beyond the innumerable grand photographers who have influenced and inspired him, Guillou also draws upon cinematic references such as the Wim Wenders film Paris Texas, whose colours, characters and mysterious landscapes marked the beginning of Guillou’s long, photographic odyssey across America.
