The series “Night Colours” shows industrial facilities, trees, buildings or bridges immersed in nighttime darkness. The spotlighted subjects condense into colorful luminaries, which take on tangible form by means of the stark contrasts in their sculptural quality.
“Keen Insight” is a new series in which Peters plays with our conventional perspective. The works provide a view into the depths, each detail having equal importance to all the other parts of the image. Razor-sharp, the foreground, middle ground and background are staged on an equal footing. This new, unusual perception, which simultaneously communicates to us that which otherwise would only be possible in a sequence of successive images, contributes to the surreal character of these photographs.
When we see the word “Skylines” we think of pictures showing the outline of a city seen from a distance, where the boundary between above and below (or to be more precise between horizon and sky) is clearly demarcated and whose format you would expect to be landscape rather than portrait. The reversal of proportions in Ralf Peters’ photos gives rise to a completely different perception, which makes the horizon and as such the image itself seem as though shot through a keyhole. The observer appears to perceive the motifs from a bird’s-eye view, although in reality this is not how the photographs were taken.
BERNHARD KNAUS FINE ART was founded in 1996 by Bernhard Knaus in Mannheim. 2007 we opened our new gallery on Niddastrasse 84 in Frankfurt, just a stonethrow away from the central train station. The gallery currently represents 12 artists domestically and abroad and curates six exhibitions annually in the 310 sqm space.
Since the beginning we have placed special emphasis on the continuous and long-term support and promotion of the artists we represent. We regularly publish our own books and also work with external publishing houses. Additionally, we cooperate with museums and other non-commercial institutions across the world, as we lend works from our collection to various exhibitions projects. A close collaboration with a network of international galleries allows us to offer works from a wide range of modern and contemporary artists.
Initially our concept centered on exploring photography as an artistic medium. In the last couple of years we have expanded our focal point to include varying painterly stances, spanning from abstract to representational.
Thematically we aim to shed light on fundamental questions regarding human perception. We are particularly interested in artists who reflect within their works issues concerning experiences and perceptions of our time.
