Paris Photo LA 2015 :

Preview

The gallery exhibits My Grandma’s Den by artist Cole Sternberg. In this body of work, Sternberg uses a variety of photographic techniques and applications to collage together the visual of his grandmother’s den in Long Island, NY. The works blur concepts of traditional photography with contemporary painting and collage to alter the surface and to create texture. My Grandma’s Den encapsulates our entire American society over the past sixty years. The work is a historically revisionist time capsule, an explanation and a gravestone. Elegant and decaying: beauty confronted with agoraphobia: A Wall Street Journal, a knit pillow of puppies, an 1894 impressionist piece, a remote control. Sternberg states, “I simply love how personal it feels while also representing such a snapshot of society. It boils over with content to address.” Sternberg touches on a plethora of issues subversively in the pieces, including American capitalism, media influence, mental health and art history. The body of work is meant to entice the viewer into further inquiry into the details, as well as their own similar experiences.
