Paul Mpagi Sepuya is a photographer whose projects bring together the history of portraiture, queer production and collaboration networks, and materials and concepts specific to the black community. His interest also includes modern queer literature, issues of artistic responsibility and attention to issues of representation. In his most recent works, Sepuya dispels the myth of the “decisive moment” and reveals the structures that support photography in the literal sense of the term: tripod, pedestal, a friend’s hand pressing the shutter button while the artist adjusts the lens. Our presentation at Paris Photo 2021 includes works from the following series: Screen, Mirror Study, Drop Scene, and Darkroom Mirror.
Paul Mpagi Sepuya Born in San Bernardino, United States, in 1982; lives and works in Santa Clarita.
