Between the European Month of Photography, Paris Photo, Fotofever Paris and other festivities this month, photography is taking over Paris. The Magnum Agency is taking advantage of the opportunity with an astonishing program of exhibitions and events: a photomaton imitating the style of the agency’s radical portrait artists (Martin Parr, Steve McCurry, Paolo Pellegrin, Bruce Gilden, Philippe Halsman, Elliott Erwitt); a group exhibition by and about Brazil (Jonas Bendiksen, Pio Figueiroa, Garapa, David Alan Harvey, Alex Majoli, Susan Meisalas, Midia Ninja, Breno Rotatori, André Vieira, Barbara Wagner); a new #MAGNUMSquare sale on Instagram with signed 6×6-inch prints for $100 a piece, taken by 45 of the agency’s photographers; workshops and master classes taught by Eli Reed, Larry Towell, Jérôme Sessini and Bruce Gilden; portrait sessions with Paolo Pellegrin; and book signings.
The sale is a journey through the Magnum photographers’ archives. Each photographer has selected an image and tells the story behind it. Peter Van Agtmael chose a Chilean landscape with mountains made red by the sun. In the foreground, the stone wall of a courtyard interrupted by the threshold on an oversized door. This isn’t what we’re used to seeing from Van Agtmael, but the door is a metaphor for his entry into the world of photography, since it was in Chile that Van Agtmael learned to be free in his photography, and where he had his first experience of conflict. “Although this picture is a departure from most of my work, it was in that place I discovered who I was supposed to be,” he explains. Through the selection of photographs, the viewer passes from the liberating love of the most remote corners of the earth to the cultural ravages of the war in Afghanistan, from protests in the Vietnam War to the social issues of contemporary American society.
