A sale of Paris Match photographs from the 1960s

Preview

A tremendous sale, a masterpiece of nostalgia. An especially magnificent picture will be shown: that of the loving relationship between the actress Catherine Deneuve and the photographer David Bailey. It’s the sale of Partis Match photos from the 1960s at Cornette de Saint Cyr this Wednesday, entitled Nos Années 60! Glamour, rock’n’roll et Contestation. It’s been organised by Agnès Vergez and Marc Brincourt, from Paris Match magazine, who will now introduce it.

Thank you, gentlemen! In this era, you did everything, everything that makes us dream today, we who weren’t or were hardly in the world. You mixed with de Gaulle and Kennedy, celebrated Picasso, César and Dali, tasted Sagan, Beauvoir and Sartre, slept at Woodstock, trembled for Muhammad Ali at the ringside, all on the edge. At that time, you dined with Alain Delon and Romy Schneider, fawned over Brigitte Bardot, “Paris Match’s little fiancée” when she amused the editorial staff with her joie de vivre. You immortalised Mireille Darc, Marlene Dietrich and Jane Fonda, wonderful, in the film studios. All through the bubbling “sixties”, you approached with the same admiration Johnny Hallyday, Ray Charles, Georges Brassens and the Beatles.

And then, impassioned by the news and its disturbances, you all applied to go and witness, sometimes at the risk of your lives, the war in Algeria, the Six-day War in the Middle East, and Vietnam. Amongst you the competition was fierce and often conflicted, but it only sharpened your thirst for information and your legendary resourcefulness. That was what would bring back the biggest scoop, “a double page”, or “make the cover”! At that time there were more than thirty of you on staff for Paris Match. Gentlemen and louts at the same time, you drove the most beautiful sports cars, spent the evenings at Castel’s and chartered the Caravelle to cover Pope Paul VI in the Holy Land. But, above all, you never turned down a job and never hesitated to go straight back in through the window when you’d been thrown out of the door.

Every day, we continue to discover the size of the photographic treasure you created, you, the Paris Match photographers of the 1960s, and we make it our duty to make it shine at its best, so that you are known and recognized for the greatness of your talent.

To you gentlemen Paris Match photographers, Thank You!

Agnès Vergez et Marc Brincourt
