For the past several years, the Montreal photographer Norman Rajotte has been exploring the small territory , located at the foot of Mont Mégantic, near La Patrie, a village southeast of Québec, Canada.
Created between 2004 and 2010, the series Like a Whisper tells the story of the intimate relationship that developed between the artist and this wooded area. Little by little, image after image, Rajotte planted roots in the several acres of forest to the point of becoming one with it. Contemplating the growth of the vegetation or traces of animal activity, he photographed the constant metamorphosis of “his” forest. Like a Whisper bears witness to a powerful feeling that unites man and animal, when the former joins the latter by becoming increasingly immersed in nature.
It was in the early 1980s, having worked as a documentary photographer, that he adopted a more introspective approach, focusing on self-awareness and a closer relationship with nature. Using an intuitive methodology, Rajotte patiently developed an intimate vision of the land.
To see his images is to retrace the paths of his meditation, to penetrate the very substance of the landscape, and delve into its very unfamiliarity.
