Once every spring for the last six years the picturesque Norwegian coastal town Kristiansund turns into a photographer’s paradise, with the world’s top photographers meeting up to share their work, their experiences or simply to share a glass of wine and a pleasant conversation at the Nordic Light International Festival of Photography, a photographic festival unlike any other.
Between April 24th and 28th the festival will explode with a cavalcade of visual impressions and expressions, gripping stories and passionately committed enthusiasts of all kinds. Kristiansund is the place to be for anyone seeking springtime inspiration and new impulses, and the word is quickly getting around.
Since its beginnings in 2006, Nordic Light has achieved incredible success. The visitors increased from 12,000 in 2006 to a staggering 90,000 in 2011. The main reason for this is the festival’s collection of top ranking photographers; the unique possibility to meet the stars of the photographic world face-to-face at exhibitions, lectures or even down at the pub.
The festival has become a magnet for anyone interested in photography and anyone interested in seeing the world though others’ eyes. You see, the visitors are not just photographers, but storytellers of all kinds. The festival is a tribute to photography as an art form and an arena showcasing the diversity of expression demonstrated by top class photographers. The festival’s success underlines the fact that photography is the world’s most popular hobby, and once again we can welcome some of the really big names: Bruce Davidson, Mary Ellen Mark and Martin Bell, Greg Gorman, Gilbert Garcin, James Mollison, Robert Pledge, Kirsten Klein, Peter Gerdehag, Farzana Wahidy, Pål Hermansen, Bjørn Opsahl, Stuart Franklin, Abe Frajndlich and more.
The Greek word for “photograph” means to draw or write with light, and the festival takes its name from the light on this “roof of Europe”. Nordic Light’s Artistic Director, Morten Krogvold, compares the light in Kristiansund with that of Venice – so it is fitting that the festival celebrates the light of spring.
“Joining Nordic Light is a great way to recharge your brain. The festival is a delicacy for photography lovers, whether you just like photography or are a hard-core enthusiast”, says Artistic Director Morten Krogvold. “We want to be a festival for everyone who is interested in people, for those who want to develop themselves by listening to other people’s stories and to catch a glimpse of the world through other’s lenses. Our festival is not yet the biggest, but still, the very best. Welcome!”
The festival: April 24-28, 2012
