Having successfully experimented with the “Camera Obscura” technique over the last 20 years, waiting for the right lighting; strenuous darkening processes; framing and focusing attempts; Marja Pirilä (1957, Finland), has exhibited countless projects using this age-old and unusual method.
Marja Pirilä ‘s initial interest in camera obscura was ignited from a nocturnal insight: in a room transformed into a camera obscura where she could simultaneously, on the same piece of film, capture a person, his/her room and the scenery streaming in through a window. The photographs from her Interior/Exterior work emerged in Finland, Norway and Italy in the late 90’s. Marja Pirilä views photography as a journey, not only into people, but also into herself.
Beside the photographic work, Marja Pirilä has designed and constructed several different kinds of three dimensional camera obscuras, in collaboration with photographer Petri Nuutinen. she has held dozens of solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Finland and abroad. Her art works have been acquired by both public and private art collections. Marja Pirilä has received The Finnish State Award for Photography. In addition she has published numerous photography books, amongst these “Speaking Light” (2006) and “Inner Landscapes” (2012).
