After having worked as Artistic Director of Studio Harcourt, Pierre-Anthony Allard today refers to himself, at 50 years old, as a street photographer. He began photographing newsagents in the streets of Paris, the Kiosquiers. “In 5 years, the kiosquiers will have disappeared. People won’t have time to read anymore. But the men who are on the street-corners, they are the last transmitters of reading.
The kiosquiers have very difficult work conditions. They have a sort
of circus mentality that I adore, they are very cultivated, and have
an extraordinary hidden side. They are authentic intelligence
officers, in constant contact with passers-by. We must defend them,
they are true personalities like those you only find in movies! I wanted to light them up with a bit of an Oriental color, or drape them
in early morning light. Early morning light is truly poetic, it is life in Paris, and we will soon be sad to see that the kiosquiers have
disappeared.”
