Via interviews with heads of galleries, foundations, agencies and photo festivals, we’ll be introducing you to some of the most important figures in contemporary Indian photography. Photography in India, it’s everywhere you look, from the national and local press—which thrives in part due to the country’s growing literacy rate—to ad campaigns and NGOs, who depend on photographers to document their actions in the field.
Although photography was introduced in India by the British at the end of the 19th century, here the medium has yet to attain the status of an art form. The photography market is still emerging, and the number of photography venues remains small given the country’s size.
But the situation encourages the country’s few champions of photography to work all the more tirelessly, discovering new talents and precious archives while promoting the subcontinent’s photographers abroad. The subjects of today’s articles are the people fighting for the future of Indian photography.
