Natasha Caruana follows in the footsteps of the art duo Mazaccio & Drowilal as the winner of the BMW Residency at the Musée Nicéphore Nièpce. The young London photographer just spent three months in Châlon-sur-Saône, where she attempted to unravel the mystery of “love at first sight.”
Caruana endeavors to document reality. Her photographs are an inventory of romantic relationships, sometimes echoing her own experience in love. Starting with infidelity, the series « Lying Still, portraits of The Other Woman » (2005) and « Married Man » (2008-2009), examine the motivations of adulterous men. The photographs are raw in nature, since Caruana isn’t attempting to describe specific places or subjects. Rather, her photographs are a stylistic mode that disturbs the limits between the reality and representation.
More recently, Natasha discovered a website selling second-hand wedding dresses, which she used for the series « Fairytale for Sale » (2011-2013), a succession of portraits of faceless newlyweds. For her residency at Chalon-sur-Saône, Caruana will explore a phenomenon she recently experienced for the first time: love at first sight.
