Arles 2020 from day to day by Thierry Maindrault
The city of Arles has always had a special relationship with photography. This attraction certainly has its origins in the variations of light which are variable both along a day and along a year. In addition, there is a wealth, almost inexhaustible, of both living and material subjects that are likely to be sublimated by the image. This is how, from the 19th century, the city of Arles began to sponsor and support the works of photographers. It should also be remembered that five years before the beginning of the Rencontres, Jean Maurice Rouquette had created a department of photographic art within the “Musée Réattu”.
It is therefore natural that the “Musée Réattu” actively participates every year, with one or more photographic exhibitions, at the Rencontres Photographiques Internationales d’Arles. Despite the doubts, the cancellations and the sanitary obligations, the Museum offers, in a subtle mixture of genres, the Pandora’s Box where we find a number of well known photographers who are very inspired by or who fit into the Museum’s private collections.
