A concise overview of American photography, that forms a comprehensive and high-calibre focal point within the collection, is presented for the first time. At the beginning of the 1960s, a young generation of photographers started to take a close look at the changing political, social and environmental conditions that reflect the reality of American life. Inspired by Walker Evans’ documentary style, they devised revolutionary pictorial forms that not only greatly influenced subsequent generations for decades but German photography as a whole. Whereas Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Larry Clark, Lee Friedlander and Garry Winogrand, who are now seen as classical modern photographers, were committed to black-and-white photography, William Eggleston and Stephen Shore established colour photography as an artistic form of expression of their own in their visual road movies. The exhibition covers the whole spectrum from street photography in the late 1960s to the pictures taken by the artist Zoe Leonard just a few years ago in New York.
