The 9th edition of the Moscow PhotoBiennale is taking place from March 6th through July 1st, 2012. This major photographic event is presenting 50 exhibitions in different locations throughout the capital; Russian and International photographers will be displayed side by side. The 3 main themes selected by organizers for this 2012 edition areAmerica in Focus“, “On the Road” and “Cinema Photography“.
America in Focus
As part of the cultural exchange between the United States and Russia, the event is honoring America with several exhibitions. Two photographic series about New York are on display at the Multimedia Art Museum: one taken by renowned photographer William Klein who looked at his native city through his viewfinder, or Chinese artist Ai Weiwei who took pictures of his life in New York from 1983-1993. Or the series on display at the Manege by Tim Davis who features Olympic Games of a different order, and the great documentary work by Doug Menuew about the Silicon Valley.
On the Road
The road is an inexhaustible source for photography. Pieter Hugo takes spectators on the trail of hyena tamers in the Nigerian capital, Mikhael Subotzky, member of the Magnum Agency, opens doors to the sadly renowned prison Beaufort West in South Africa. Alinka Echeverria blends into a crowd of pilgrims headed for the Notre Dame Basilica of Guadalupe. Andrei Gordasevich covers the streets of Havana while Sergei Shestakov explores dead or deserted cities.
Some of the topics treated touch other represented themes, such as Andrew Bush who worked on American drivers in their rental cars, using rear view mirrors, windshields, or side windows in his visuals. The work of Gonzalo Lebrija and his Californian landscapes is also noteworthy, as well as Natasha Pavlovskaya and Iris Olsson who took their pictures in trains.
Photography and Cinema
This year’s festival special guests are from the world of movies, with directors, cameramen, producers and of course, set photographers.
It is the opportunity for the public to discover the works of Wim Wenders, Walter Rosenblum or Vladimir Mishukov.
We will present the entire program for the 9th Moscow PhotoBiennale and its exhibition spaces. Discover the photographic works on display at the Multimedia Art Museum, at the Ekaterina Foundation, the Glaz Gallery, the Cervantes Institute, the Modern Art Museum, the Manege, the New Manage or even the A3 Gallery and the Gallery of Fine-Arts Zourab Tsereteli…
