A week after its opening, the Rencontres Photographiques de Montpellier has welcomed nearly 9,000 visitors. So far, the 13th edition of the festival has been a great success. Organized by the association Grain d’Image, under the direction of Christian Maccotta, the Festival des Boutographies selected thirteen European photographers. The selection was made from the more than 500 portfolios submitted.
According to Georges Vercheval, founder of the Musée de la Photographie de Charleroi in Belgium and president of the jury: “Photography, banal and fascinating, faithful or unpredictable, carries with it potential questions and discoveries. Photography is a thinking being, expressing its agreement or dissent, possessing memory.”
Thomas Vanden Driessche’s marchers rub shoulders with Emmanuel Piau’s protesters. The portraits of Céline Anaya Gautier show us the reality of women living on the street. Gilles Picarel and Marcus Koppen examine sexual identity. From Italy to Argentina, Alejandro Erbetta embarks on the same journey taken by his immigrant grandparents. The question of roots is also addressed in the work of Sabrina Tegger and Sarah Carp. Delphine Burtin’s brilliant still lifes question our consumerist lifestyle. Not to mention the series by Camilla de Maffei on Sarajevo, awarded the Jury Prize 2013.
