This exhibition at the MoMA evokes the major influence photography had on the avant-garde artistic movements of the early 20th century: Dada, Bauhaus, Surrealism, Constructivism, new objectivity, conceptual art and post conceptual. The shaping of what came to be known as “New Vision” photography bore the obvious influence of “lens-based” and “time-based” works. A variety of 250 prints will be featured on the walls of the Edward Steichen Gallery , including some early Works by Man Ray, Berenice Abbott or Helen Levitt. Many close-up views, experiments with different lenses, distortions, mirrors, collages, enigmatic scenes: the exhibition highlights the photographic heritage that today’s photographers use, perhaps, without consciously knowing its origins. For one’s own evolution, it is important to remember one’s ancestors.
