This exhibition features an exclusive collection by an amateur photographer of the 1930s, France Demay. On the eve of the Second World War, members of working-class Parisians sports clubs were training for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Fully committed both politically and athletically, these young worker were also enjoying their first paid holidays. We see them at the stadium, in the forest and mountains, on their bikes, running and diving.
Their beliefs led them to become members of the FSGT (Fédération sportive et gymnique du travail), a labor union formed in 1934, and, in some cases, participate in the People’s Olympiad in Barcelona, held in protest of the Berlin Games.
One of the witnesses was France Demay. An amateur sports photographer and skilled worker, Demay photographed his surroundings with spontaneity and a real sense of framing, capturing moments of happiness, testaments to a time when we wanted to believe in a better life.
