Milan Art Fair, MIA was born from an idea by curator and collector Fabio Castelli with exhibitors selected by an eclectic scientific committee including curators, critics, and cultural activists. The fair featured 200 exhibitors, 194 artists, art galleries, photo labs, publishing houses, foundations, archives and highly qualified specialized schools. MIA was unique in its approach, with galleries featuring one-man shows and nearly 40 independent artists. The fair emphasized the relationship between photography and printing and production techniques and included a variety of workshops and round tables discussions. The catalogue was an experiment designed to allow visitors to compose their own book, with each stand featuring a personalized, self-made brochure. With primarily Italian participants, the fair responded to public expectations and brought photography as an art form to the attention of the Italian general public.
