MIA Photo Fair, the international photography fair in Italy since 2011, announces the 3rd edition of the Irinox Save the Food Award and the 1st edition of the Welcome to My Unknown Award – Photography Award for Emerging Contemporary Artists. The deadline for submissions for both awards is February 25, 2024. The selected artists of both will exhibit in two dedicated shows during the 13th edition of MIA Photo Fair (from 11 to 14 April, 2024 – 10 April VIP Preview) at MiCo Allianz in Milan.
The Irinox Save the Food Award, curated by Claudio Composti, independent curator, co-founder and artistic director of mc2gallery, is open to visual artists of all ages and nationalities, who work on the theme of food and food waste in any declination. After the exhibition at MIA Photo Fair, the show will travel to Parma as part of Cibus Off, the Fuori Salone of CIBUS, the main event in Italy dedicated to food. The work of one of the selected artists will also be exhibited during the 3rd edition of the Yeast Photo Festival, curated by Edda Fahrenhorst, in Matino (Lecce). A purchase award of 3,000 € is also envisaged by Irinox. Food has always been part of the human heritage also as a carrier of symbolism and critical socio-anthropological implications: today the theme is even more critical as an issue connected to sustainability. The award promotes the link between photography, food and the visual arts, and a rethinking of the relationship between man and the environment, nutrition and identity, environmental impact and climate change.
The leitmotif of MIA Photo Fair, which will be held for the first time at the Allianz MiCo venue in Milan, is Changing – The Change Expressed through Photography, a theme that also fits well with the Welcome To My Unknown Award. It’s a new call for artists specially designed for the fair by Erik Kessels – a Dutch artist, curator, and visual communication expert. It aims to engage emerging contemporary artists under 35, who work with photography as an artistic language. Up to 15 participating artists will have the opportunity to exhibit their work during the MIA Photo Fair. As Erik Kessels says “We live in times where lens-based technology is fully developed and anything is possible in image making. The ‘how’ becomes less important, the ‘why’ takes center stage. Exactly this is why new ideas and the creation of original narratives in photography become essential”.
