Amandine Kuhlmann presents her video installation Cash me Online in the Studio of the MEP. Produced in 2023, this project combining performance and video explores social networks as a space for representation and staging.
The artist has created a fictional character, a hypersexualised alter ego, who evolves both online and in public performances. Adopting glamorous, artificial or suggestive poses inspired by the trends in vogue on social platforms, this character re-enacts the omnipresent stereotypes that define these virtual spaces and impose codified norms.
The project presents a succession of short sequences: from videos of ‘Mukbang’ – a phenomenon that involves watching young women eat excessive amounts of food – to the wellbeing advice of the ‘Clean Girl’, a follower of a healthy and productive lifestyle punctuated by personal development mantras. To embody these multiple archetypes, Amandine Kuhlmann combines images of herself with videos found online. Using the deepfake technique, she superimposes her face on these foreign bodies, accentuating the artificiality and strangeness of these stagings.
This work highlights the impact of social networks on the commodification of bodies, particularly those of women, whose condition remains largely influenced by these imposed standards. Cash Me Online takes a critical and sarcastic look at these injunctions, offering a space for reflection that will help us to free ourselves from them.
