Eduard Planting Gallery in Amsterdam presents from 10 August until 28 September an exhibition of Marie-Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier. With ‘Contemplation’ the Dutch fine art photographer shows timeless still lifes and classic, staged images of interiors. Stillness and purity are important characteristics.
Marie-Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier is best known for her tranquil portraits, intimate photographs of historic interiors and winter scenes of Amsterdam. She uses an analogue Hasselblad camera and the light available, which results in atmospheric images that always contain an element of mystery. The photos have a completely unique style and character.
In the last couple of years the artist has also allowed colours in her work, seen in the images of the ‘Contemplation Still life’ series. These elegant and serene still lifes have a painting-like quality. Another series in colour is ‘At the Window’, in which she introduces models. The 17th-century painter Johannes Vermeer is a great source of inspiration.
Marie-Jeanne van Hövell tot Westerflier presented a first exhibition in 1997 and attended the masterclasses of landscape photographer Martin Kers and portrait photographer Koos Breukel. In 2014 she published the highly praised book ‘Hidden Beauty’ with stylish interiors of three monumental canal houses. Eduard Planting Gallery presents her autonomous work at art fairs such as Art Breda, Art Karlsruhe and PAN Amsterdam.
