LS Galeria at the Four Seasons Hotel in Mexico City presents an exhibition by Julia Fullerton-Batten entitled: Frida – A Singular Vision of Beauty and Pain. Here is her presentation.
In 2022 I was invited to attend a retrospective exhibition of my work in Mexico City. I fell in love with everything Mexican.
The people, colours, and the rhythm of life; and so much of what I fell in love with came from Frida Kahlo, her influence is everywhere, she seems to pulse through the veins of Mexico and I knew I had to return to create my own in-depth personal project, honouring this female goddess.
Frida Kahlo’s art transcends the confines of the canvas and becomes a testament to female unity & empowerment. By embracing her own vulnerabilities and sharing her painful human experience with unabashed honesty, she shattered the boundaries of what art could be and became an icon of hope and inspiration for generations of women artists.
Her legacy as an artist reminds us to embrace our own uniqueness, confront our challenges head-on, and find beauty in the most unexpected places. Her paintings stand as a testament to the enduring power of art to heal, inspire, and ignite change.
Through her paintings, Kahlo offers us a unique perspective on Mexican culture, identity, and the human condition, leaving an indelible mark on both national and global art history. Even today, 70 years after her death, her work still feels very contemporary.
Frida Kahlo is an inspiration to so many people but I think female artists have a special bond with her power and integrity, her ability to openly reflect on the most vulnerable parts of her existence whilst maintaining her inner strength and dignity.
My project was only possible because I received so much help from the people of Mexico, Frida is still pulling people together 70 years after her death!
In a world that seems to be increasingly fractured and broken I wanted my project to remind people of the strength, resilience and unifying power within Frida Kahlo’s art.
