The Beach is a project that I have been working for the last 7 years. The work consists in a series of portraits taken on the beaches of Barcelona city, probably the most popular city-beach in Europe. I tried to take advantage of the intrinsic equality that the beach enforces on its inhabitants to let my subjects be true individuals rather than mere members of categories ( political, economic or religious ). I tried to show my subjects sympathetically but without glorification nor judgement or voyeurism. Also you might find interesting that I was one of the professional divers who worked during the 90’s in the constrution of the breakwaters that would create most of Barcelona beaches.
Lluís Artús
Born in Sabadell ( Barcelona ) Lluís Artús came to photography alter a serious diving accident put an end to his career as a deep-sea diver. lronically the accident happened when he was building the breakwaters that would protect the future beaches of Barcelona; beaches thal now provide the colorful canvas on which his series The Beach is based.
Lluis studied photography at the Institut d’Estudis Fotografics de Catalunya, alter which he started working for sever al agencies and newspapers.
ln 1996 Lluís moved to London where he lived for ten years, developing his photographie style, which has been influenced by both British and American photographers.

The work of Lluís Artús blends the aesthetics of commercial work with the creative interest of persona! projects thal intend to tell stories of people and culture. He has been working for the last six years on an ongoing project about the beach culture in Barcelona.
