Liège 2012 : Georges Thiry

Preview

Georges Thiry (1904-1994) was a self-taught photographer from Liège. A friend of the Surrealists, Thiry was the subject of a retrospective at the Musée de la Photographie in Charleroi in 2001. Thiry photographed, among other things, his circle of riends and the prostitutes he befriended. These magnificent, tender black-and-white images endow the portraits with an exceptional dimension of humanity. A selection of his portraits will be on display throughout the city. Perfectly in sync with the theme of the Biennial, these images taken in the 1950s and 60s stand out for both their representation of women and their sober documentary form. The style is sometimes shocking, colorful and obscene even compared to today’s standards of publicity.
