Organized by Les Chiroux, the Liège Cultural Center, the Biennial of Photography and Visual Arts (March 10 – May 6) highlights the many facets of contemporary photography through several exhibitions. Around sixty photographers have been invited to participate in the 8th edition of the Biennial. This year’s theme is “Only you, only me, Images de l’Amour, Amour de l’image” (Images of Love, Love of the Image). Love—this eminently paradoxical and complex sensation, source of the greatest joy and the deepest sorrow, of passion and solitude, the foundation of life and the abyss of misunderstanding—will be explored in all its forms.
The main exhibition, Only you, only me, presented at the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain (MAMAC) brings together artists like Elina Brotherus, JH Engström, Erwin Olaf, Eric Rondepierre and Pierre & Gilles. Nan Goldin will present her major work The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, a slideshow with more than 800 photographs, set to music by the artist.
Holland is this year’s honorary guest country, with nine of its artists exhibited by Frits Gierstberg (Head curator of the Nederlands Fotomuseum Rotterdam) in Hangar B9 on the Ecole Supérieure des Arts St-Luc.
Also on display will be the group exhibitions: Next of Skins at the Brasseurs Art contemporain, an important Liège cultural institution; Rumours at the MadMusée; and the work of the collective Out of Focus at the La Châtaigneraie Center for Contemporary Art. The unusual work of the Belgian duo Cravat & Bada will be at the Galerie Satellite. Photographs by Liège native Georges Thiry will decorate the town’s streets.
