Let’s Go See the Sea with Doisneau

Preview

From Boulogne to Menton, passing by Le Havre, Deauville, Guilvinec, La Turballe, La Baule, Les Sables-d’Olonne, Ile de Ré, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Marseille, Toulon or Saint-Tropez … “Let’s go see the sea with Doisneau” is a walk by the sea, from beaches to ports and even under the sea. water, company of fishermen, bathers, dockers, divers, day-sailors and of divers. The exhibition Let’s go see the sea with Doisneau will present 80 prints on the theme of the sea. The work shed light on the often unprecedented clichés of someone who qualified himself as a “fisherman of images”.

Internationally renowned photographer for his work on Paris and the suburbs, Robert Doisneau (1912-1994) was also, in “revolt of the marvelous”, a benevolent explorer of the French coast. Throughout his life and his career, he has looked from Brittany to the Côte d’Azur, through the Vendée and the Basque Country, to carry out press reports, respond to advertising orders and enrich the archives of the Rapho agency, of which he is a prominent representative. Crossing the twentieth century by photographing his contemporaries, he left to his death in 1994, more than 450,000 negatives. His production, which covers a very wide editorial panel – press, art magazines, specialized periodicals or reprints apart from trade – is representative of the dissemination possibilities offered to the images of a post-war photographer-illustrator.

The ROBERT DOISNEAU WORKSHOP is the structure created by Annette Doisneau and Francine Deroudille, the two daughters of the photographer, to ensure the conservation and the representation of his work. AT Montrouge, in the apartment where Robert Doisneau himself worked for more than fifty years, 450 000 negatives are archived, allowing to continue the creation of exhibitions and of publishing works and sometimes offering the happiness of the discovery of an unprecedented report. ANGELINA MESLEM curator of the exhibition is historian of photography. After studies at the Ecole du Louvre, she was responsible for a decade of the collection of photographs of the National Maritime Museum. Exhibition curator and author on several occasions, she is now responsible for the Documentation Unit of the Service des musées de France.
