Y VOIR CLAIR dans le méli-mélo de la photo (SEEING CLEARLY in the hodgepodge of photography) initiated by Les Filles de la Photo, is a White Paper of good practices and is the result of a consultation with all stakeholders of the ecosystem. Necessary, critical without being moralistic, this new work aims to encourage good practices between photographers and decision-makers in the sector, thus working towards better mutual understanding and greater efficiency in daily work. “Making a declaration together”: this is also the ambition to which we, Les Filles de la Photo, wish to contribute for an entire sector, in order to move towards a better economy for photographers.
The genesis and content of this work are presented during a meeting led by Anne-Claire Meffre, between Les Filles de la Photo, photographers and actors from the ecosystem at ADAGP with the participation of Pascal Beausse curator, responsible for the photographic collection of the National Center for Plastic Arts, Anne-Lise Broyer, photographer, Philippe Guionie, director of Résidence 1+2 in Toulouse, Pierre Morel, photographer and Lucie Moriceau-Chastagner, responsible for the photographic collections of the Musée of the Army, deputy head of the Fine Arts and Heritage department.
Highlighting the realities and issues – often poorly understood – of the various stakeholders, this book also compiles recommendations and concrete advice intended to streamline relationships between photographers and their interlocutors. In a spirited and caring tone, this guide seeks to defuse surprising situations experienced in all fields of photography: schools, communication agencies, advertisers, agents, media, festivals, residencies, awards, galleries, publishing houses, institutions.
Structured around these key areas, the different chapters are the culmination of rigorous collaborative work: 33 in-depth interviews with photographers as well as 10 round tables bringing together 100 professional players in the photography ecosystem made it possible to verbalize the blockages and blunders from each other, but also and above all, to share virtuous examples and tangible solutions. The book formulates the recommendations resulting from all these discussions aimed at both photographers and decision-makers in the sector. Each chapter is divided into two parts: first what emerges from the exchanges with photographers, or from round tables by profession, then advice in the form of a list, resulting from these exchanges, addressed on the one hand to the photographers, on the other hand to the actors in the field concerned. Always for the sake of clarification, definitions and insights into the professions and the role of those with whom photographers are required to interact throughout their careers are given in the appendix.
Finally, “The Essentials” formulates in the form of “compass” the main lessons and recommendations expressed by and for photographers and actors. We wanted to make this book accessible to as many people as possible by making it available, for a year, free of charge, on the Filles de la Photo website in the form of a flipbook.
