BAL BEISTEGUI: Venice, September 1951
For a single evening, the multimillionaire art collector, Carlos de Beistegui, revived the 18th century Venice we thought to be deep under dead waters of the lagoon. He had the right setting: Tiepolo frescoes from the Palazzo Labia, which Beistegui owned and restored. He sent out 1200 invitations for actors, with 1200 masks. On the Piazza San Geremia, behind the palace, the ball was held for one and all, and the Begum opened the party arm-and-arm with a Venetian glassmaker. It was a mid-September night’s dream. At sunrise, the last lamps expired, and the last gondola carried away the last mask. Venice, for a few hours, was able to relive its past splendors.
