Published by L’Artiere Éditions, Stefano De Luigi‘s Televisiva takes us to the heart of the transformation of Italian television in the Berlusconi era. Through a series of black and white images taken between 1994 and 2009, Stefano De Luigi reveals the effects of reality TV and over- mediatisation. He denounces a television world over-saturated with colour and superficial content, broadcast in standardised formats. This media landscape, teeming with chaos, has become a tool of propaganda and mass entertainment.
This work documents a pivotal period in Italy, when television helped to shape society, marked by Silvio Berlusconi’s two decades of influence. The images, which have remained unpublished since then, are now approached from a sociological angle.
Televisiva’s photographs reveal television in the midst of upheaval, bearing witness to an era when entertainment supplanted informations. The screen, which has become a veritable ‘media circus’, embodies both the fascination and the alienation of viewers.
Televisiva is an analysis of the societal impact of television and its role in the cultural evolution of the 1990s. In it, Stefano De Luigi bears witness to an era when the television image shaped political perceptions and realities. Today, this observation resonates even more strongly, as the media continue to play a central role in shaping and even manipulating opinions and constructing political narratives. Echoing the media strategies that have marked the rise of figures such as Donald Trump in the United States, this project highlights the importance of understanding the power of images in our contemporary societies.
