What drives artists when they leave school? Does an artist born in the 3rd millennium see his role in society differently? What are the challenges of starting a career for an artist? These are some of the questions that 100% L’Expo asks each year by opening the Grande Halle de la Villette to young artists from French art schools. Here is the work of Daria Svertilova, presented by her text.
Student residences are the only type of social housing that currently exists in Ukraine. They were built during Soviet times and since then the buildings and living conditions in the dormitories have not changed much, unlike Ukraine and its people. I wanted to photograph these residences because they represent the co-existence of the Soviet heritage and the new pro-European generation. This ambiguity attracted me, for me it is representative of the change in the mentality of Ukraine today – a former communist country which is moving towards globalization.
All these buildings which seem cold and unified hide numerous rooms which bring together personal objects: the drawings, photos and signs of each student. Neither a family home nor a rented apartment, residences are a place of transition from adolescence to adult life.

Designed as a professional springboard and a showcase for the emerging scene, 100% L’Expo (March 27 – April 28, 2024) is the unmissable event, with free and open access, for contemporary art dedicated to young creation.
Around fifty young artists spread over 3,500m².
Neither a contemporary art fair nor a thematic exhibition, the project is designed as a non-exhaustive snapshot of the young creation, presenting with each new edition a plurality of profiles and subjects. The works of around fifty artists are displayed over more than 3,500m² of the Grande Halle, in a scenography entirely composed of elements recovered from previous events. Each year, La Villette collaborates with French art schools to present recently graduated artists.
For this new edition, the Beaux-Arts Nantes Saint-Nazaire and the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy integrate 100% L’Expo and join the Beaux-Arts de Marseille – INSEAMM, the Beaux-Arts de Paris, the School of Decorative Arts and the Villa Arson Nice.
The selection of artists was made by a jury composed of Thomas Conchou, artistic director of Ferme du Buisson, Daisy Lambert, independent curator, Prune Phi, artist based in Marseille who participated in the 2019 edition of 100% L’Expo, and Inès Geoffroy, exhibition project manager at La Villette and exhibition curator.
