Photography, a Peculiar Legacy at Geneva’s Musée Rath

Preview

In an attempt to promote the photography domain of Geneva, the “Révélations” exhibition at the Musée Rath takes an in-depth look at the great wealth and diversity of collections that are patrimonial, ethnographic, documentary, and artistic all at the same time. Interdisciplinary and organized in partnership with the Bibliothèque de Genève, this panorama is built from many Geneva foundations and institutions that are represented. A “Titanesque” challenge, in the words of the curator, Mayte Garcia, who brings a new look to the medium. It opens with the daguerrotypes of Jean-Gabriel Eynard, brilliant amateur who started  photography at the age of sixty-five. The journey goes up to contemporary photographers, encouraging frequent round-trips through a labyrinthian set where real study booths are arranged. One of the first frontiers of the medium was archeology with the Genevan Fred Boisonnas and his studio and Edouard Naville’s spouse, Marguerite, whose albums mix memories and archeological surveys, Egypt being their key destination at the time .

Like a constellation of possibilities that, beyond the forms and history, questions the invisible face of photography, like the journey’s last image by Laurence Huber where units of time, gender, and location blend together in order to dissolve.
Intense revelation!
