La Martinière : Women Behind the Lens. Major photographers from 1840 to the present day

Preview

La Martinière released Femmes derrière l’objectif. Photographes majeures de 1840 à nos jours by Boris Friedewald. The editions present it as follows:

A woman. A camera. An eye that observes through the lens. Since the beginnings of photography, almost two centuries ago, women have used this medium as a means of expression, even of provocation or of questioning artistic, social and political codes. Their gazes are multiple; their gender, sometimes claimed. They are photographers above all. This work honors nearly sixty international artists who, from yesterday to today, have largely contributed to the development of the discipline. Among them: Diane Arbus, Rinko Kawauchi, Germaine Krull, Lee Miller, Susan Meiselas, Tina Modotti, Cindy Sherman… From the pioneering cyanotypes of Anna Atkins to the activist work of Zanele Muholi, each portfolio is accompanied by a biography and an analysis that gives these women their rightful place in the history of photography.
