For over 40 years, Pascal Maitre has traveled the world as a photojournalist. After spending his childhood in the Berry region of France, he trained in photography, a passion he has continued to pursue ever since. His photographic reports, often commissioned by the press, take us to all corners of the globe, especially West Africa.
Until October 15, Pascal Maitre series “Métropolis” is being exhibited on the streets of Baden, Austria, as part of the La Gacilly-Baden photography festival. These photographs capture the bustling energy of cities with millions of inhabitants, blending elements of street photography and documentary style.
Cities that are ever-growing
According to UN projections, two out of three people will live in cities. While urban areas have been growing for centuries in both population and size, cities today must be designed with climate risks in mind. Environmental preservation, food sovereignty, and resource concentration are essential considerations for building the cities of tomorrow in response to climate change.
Cities that are ever-taller
To accommodate new populations, cities are expanding outward and upward. Pascal Maitre’s photographs depict people swarming around towering buildings. Urban landscapes are being constructed, and large cities are emerging, particularly in Africa, which are set to become the urban centers of the future.
With a colorful aesthetic, Pascal Maitre captures the soul of these cities and their inhabitants. Day and night, he explores vibrant neighborhoods, and with just one look, the story behind the images comes to life: the noise, the hustle, the encounters… “Métropolis” breathes the life of the city!
