Kehrer presents Adam Lampton’s book, Nothing Serious Can Happen Here Photographs from Macau, Lampton’s eye on Macau’s transformation from historic city to fantastical dreamscape.
Over the past decade, Adam Lampton has photographed the former Portuguese colony of Macau (now a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China) and witnessed its transformation from a small enclave into an international gambling mecca and leisure destination. In 2007, Macau overtook Las Vegas in terms of revenue and became the world’s largest gambling market. Macau’s colonial heritage, communist experience of capitalism and Chinese traditions continually collide and reshape Macau through the filter of their respective histories. This complexity is reflected in the large-format photos, which oscillate between past and present, expression and observation.
In addition to his international exhibitions, Lampton’s work has been featured in Art in America, The Boston Globe and Camera Austria.
