Through January 11, 2014, the Berlin gallery Hiltawsky will be exhibiting 32 portraits of women taken between 1986 and 2013 by the American photographer Just Loomis. Loomis had worked with Helmut Newton, and the two remained close friends until the latter’s death. Today Loomis lives in Los Angeles and Berlin.
Loomis cited a passage by the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas to talk about his work: “The face to face encounter entails being called by another and responding to that other. It is live immediacy. The other impacts me unlike any worldly object and does not have to utter words. The encounter demands a response. The other does not command this response but creates an immediate responsibility. It can be compared to a force.”
